Evaluation Question 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

When planning and creating our products we used a variety of technological forms to aid us.

Research and Planning

Construction of Website

When constructing the website we used WIX. WIX is a free website creation tool that was very simple and easy to use. When creating the website we had very little difficulty in placing our images and videos we had together. When creating the website we produced a selection of social media sites and linked them to website and visa versa. Therefore we had followed website conventions to creating a network of pages linked together. It was also essential to have links on the website to our other products, digipak and music video, therefore we added digipak artwork and extracts from the video appeared on the website. WIX was very effective at allowing us to create a professional website in a short time without to much difficulty.

Construction of the Digipak

When creating the digipak I expressed interest in creating an artwork oriented cover without focus on the band members. When creating the artwork we managed to achieve this incredibly well. We based the artwork approach after looking at iconic album covers and discovering the majority did not feature a band member or person on the cover and instead used an eye catching image or theme. When constructing the album cover we took stamps from Brusheazy and build them together into a meaningful image. The images used were made from black lines and transparent sections to witch we added colour and text to bring the images together.

Construction of the Video

In the process of video creation we utilized the assistance of an array of technologies, for recording the footage it came in the form of a Cannon EOS 600D, which allowed for the capture of high quality footage in the ratio we needed to match the stop motion shots. When recording a tripod was used to steady the camera so the camera didn’t shake, which would have made the footage look amateur if someone was holding it. Once the raw video was recorded it was stored on an apple mac to be edited in the industry standard software of Premier. This allowed us to add video effects to make the final product look more aesthetically professional, more colourful effects were used at points that needed to emphasis the Psychedelic appearance. To create the stop motion effect we took hundreds of individual pictures and cut down each picture to remain on screen for a fraction of a second, to create a frame rate between ten and fifteen frames per second, well below the standard video frame rate which resides at thirty, this creates a clunky motion effect that adds a layer of personality to the final product. In addition to this we used a split screen, this was in response to one of shoots in which we filmed the footage at a much lower ratio by mistake, meaning it looked pixelated when enlarged to the correct ratio. Instead of scrapping the labours of the shoot, we managed to salvage it by creating a four panel split screen, meaning we didn’t need to stretch it to fit the entire screen.

Evaluation

When answering the evaluation questions I used various tools to vary my responses:
YouTube/Premiere - This allowed me to create a video response disusing my music video and comparing it to others.
Prezi/Sway/slideshare - This allowed me to create presentations showing detailed responses to each question.
Pinterest - An image collecting program giving me the ability to make mood boards.
WIX - WIX was used to create an annotated version the website showing how each feature worked.

This variety helped make my evaluation more interesting to read/view and answer each question effectively.

Evaluation Question 3

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

When researching our target audience we both looked into fans of neo-psychedelia and what appealed to the culture during the 1960s. For this research we looked at historical footage to see what cloths were worn, how people acted and where they would go.

We also looked at the variety of music performances from the era.

Therefore we had established that our audience had a key fashion that was central to the music. And as a result we must emulate it.

Audience feedback is very important in any form product therefore we showed the products to a variety of people from both our target audience and others groups of people.This allowed us to both build on feedback and widen our appeal. When collecting feedback we made questionnaires and asked people to contribute videos explaining their opinions. This is what we received;

Based on the feedback we decided to increase the role of the cartoon characters which originally appeared on the digipak, placing them in both the website and -- through stop motion -- in the music video. We also emphasised the use of colour through filters in the music video, and used the colourful digipak design in the website background. Lending to the post-modern style we attempted to cultivate with the integration of live-action and animation to create a surrealist aesthetic style.

Evaluation Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Connecting Features

Band Logo

We created a band logo to act as a recognizable symbol, to mark our band's presence, it features in the digipak, website and is alluded to in the music video. Logo's are used by companies as symbols which are instantly recognizable to the general public, becoming synonymous with the brand. Musicians utilize these to a similar effect, often featuring on merchandise and promotional material to boost brand recognition. Logo's from the Rolling Stones and Nirvana have become so common place, they've gained fame far beyond the artists and their music. We followed this example by creating merchandise which included our logo.

Common Themes And Aesthetics

Throughout the products we attempted to adhere to set colour scheme; with pastoral blues, pinks, and greens in the digipak and website: this did not translate as strictly in the music video. While the clothing choices fit these parameters, with the blue blazer, most of the colours established in the other products didn't play a key visual role in the video.
The set theme of nature did, weaving all three products together, with many shots filmed outside in nature, and much of the art style revolving around the natural world. This was supported by the theme of death heard in the song's lyrics, and symbolized in the grave stone that is present in all three media forms.

Social Media Intergration

The logo found use in the promotional material to promote the band's web 2.0 presence and to build a social following. The same design is prominent in the profile to link it directly to the album's digipak and the website. Social media allows the band to communicate with fans and build a sense of community around the band, and by using social media to connect to other bands, to join the wider, interconnected landscape of the music genre.

Jeff Lynne
Jeff Lynne did something very similar with his
latest album Alone In The Universe. In all his products around the new release there was a strong connection of the graphics of his album cover such as the background to the home page on his website and the character featured in the graphic is the same as the one used in the music video of his lead single "When I Was A Boy". It sets up a theme between all of them and makes it clear to fans that they are part of the same product. This is something that we wanted to include in our products. His clothing is simple but formal and it carries over from the video to the website. Again as he is is signed to a major label, Sony Music, his products have the ability to look professional and be more large scale as his music is also featured on his label's website as well as his own. Overall it all creates a image for the label to sell as fans see these familiar gimmicks so that they can recognize such as the iconic ELO spaceship. The simplistic nature of the artists appearance and the more complex graphics and meaning behind his digipak and website are what inspired our work as he was closest to our genre and we wanted to create something slimier.

Evaluation Question 1

In What ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

DigiPak
Our digipak has aimed to meet both the genre conventions of both psychedelia and modern pop. This hybrid is fairly common as is seen in many new bands such as Panic At The Disco, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and The Stone Roses. We aimed to fit among those bands whilst paying homage to the bands from the 1960s and 70s such as the Beatles, The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd. Our digipak is the most effective at mixing the genres whilst staying true to both styles.

This shows how our digipak takes from older bands and still fits with modern comparisons.

Home

1.This is the home page, it includes the brand recognition of the characters which appeared in our music video and the background of our digipak. This is an important aesthetic feature of the website as it must have a recognizable atmosphere and look which is recognizable as our own.

2.Band's use touring as their primary source of profit, album and track sale support the tour. Therefore, both must be prominent on the website. We have conformed to this by making them one of the first things a visitor will see.

4.The conventions of music place emphasis on the band member's image, this is subverted as the band members aren't the focus of the website. However, their pictures are still present, conforming partially to the conventions of the form.

About

6.Fandom's are intrigued by the people behind their favorite band and often enjoy learning more about the lives of the musicians. This is the reason behind the about pages existence.

Footer

3.Music gains traction through social media in the digital age. It's vital that fans are able to quickly and easily share new releases.

5.The band logo helps us form a recognizable identity.

7.Emailing address is a standard of the form. Social media links are connected to the website which acts as a virtual hub for the artists online presence.

Shop

8.The shopping cart has become an integral part of online shops meaning it was almost necessity for us to include it. The feature allows users to easily track their purchases, making it a useful tool for us to incorporate to improve the site's user friendliness.

9.It is common for labels to be used on products to indicate what's new, on offer and what is selling well. This assists the user when deciding their purchase, this is why it's included in our shop.

10. A shop is a necessity for musicians with an online presence. Fans crave for band merchandise, making an online shop a lucrative business practice.

Tour Dates

11. Tour dates are a crucial element to all preforming band's websites. Therefore it is a necessity that we have one.

Gallery

12. A gallery is a standard feature of most music websites and allows fans to gain an incite to the creative process of artwork.

Press

13. This page shows reviews and news of the band helping keep the fans informed.

Website Comparison

Music Video
We decided that our video would focus around a single musician to create a multi instrumentalist image witch is fairly popular among the musicians from the 1960s and 1970s such as Roy Wood, Mike Oldfield, Prince and Brian Jones. However this approach to music is not regularly done in pop music therefore we challenge what is expected from a band.
